I enjoy reading about strange people, and I had finished reading ESP / occult books in my small town public library, and worked my way down to the books not-Christian religions.

The author opens with a personal history. As a boy, he was weak and sickly, catching many diseases. He survived apparently only because his father was a doctor. At age 15 he learned about Hatha yoga and studied under master.

Within a few months he developed his body into a stronger, flexible and muscular. He is no longer suffering from a disease. He went to India and founded the famous yoga school in Switzerland. This book is part of his efforts to bring the teachings of yoga to the west.

He introduces Hatha Yoga as a discipline to create health by moving more conscious of our bodies.

The ancient yogis did not intend it to be pursued for its own sake. They knew just sick and weak people could not focus their minds on higher spiritual disciplines, so that it was first necessary to bring them good health. Remember that people in India had suffered from food shortages, poor housing and infectious diseases even greater extent than they do now. For one thing, smallpox was not erased until about 1978, and countless people died from it.

However, those of us who are not looking for a higher spiritual awareness can also use Hatha yoga for more health, and this book is a great introduction. That’s what I used for many years, as a little kid to make the Plough and Head Stand in my bedroom.

chapter “Every disease has Mental Causes” was far ahead of his time, and even scientific advances have just confirmed his thesis that the body is weakened by negative thinking.

Women no longer be fixed belt, but all of us chapters reminds us to breathe deeply for optimal health.

He described asanas (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) in a way easily enough for twelve years to follow. I know, because I was twelve when I read them first.

And there are many photographs to show how the positions look when done correctly.

At the end, he gives 21-week program to follow.

One chapter is devoted to slow motion exercises done in front of a mirror to help you visualize your growing muscles. While going through the motions, you tense muscles as hard as you can.

Although I never practiced this very much, some fitness guru swears by it, as John E. Peterson.

In short, this book is still a great introduction to yoga. It’s probably better to attend a class taught by a good teacher, but if you have no courses in your area or no time or money for them, you can not go wrong with yoga and health.
